MULE Returns App Reviews

Updated Economics Issues

In this update, the colony price of Smithore went through the roof early in the game after a store fire event … I mean, $1000 for Smithore. So, the people who made Smithore cashed in, and those who didn’t couldn’t afford to buy MULEs for several turns. Game over, man! The economic system needs to be re-tweaked!

Please make this turn based like the original.

Still cant play the game with simultaneous turns happening all at once. Too old. I understand the need for a faster experience, but us elderly players who think of it more as a slower paced chess match would love to see a "retro" option. Im hoping this dream will become a reality, someday. I really want to play this game, and not feel like I torched $5.

Horribly buggy

When a game is so full of game-ruining bugs that it is literally fatiguing to enjoy or even win, then it gets one star. I could list the bugs ive found here and it would be a long list, but the devs dont deserve my time. What a sloppy decision to release this without adequate playtesting. This classic and honored title deserves a better execution than this. Edit: so I just read downloaded the game since the recent update, hoping to find an improved game that would change my review. It upsets me to say this game makes me angrier than ever. There are so many bugs that do not allow you to have a successful game and produce frustration. If I could get my money back I would. Dont be fooled by all the people leaving good reviews, on the surface this game is beautiful and attractive and has great potential. Just try to complete a game without the sloppy dev work getting in the way, it wont happen.

Great Start, Needs Improvement

I love being able to play M.U.L.E. On my iPad, but this version feels rushed. For one thing, tapping to place a mule often results in it running away because it isnt completely on the plot, even though the character is. Also, it is too easy to sell too much product or buy too much because it doesnt go based on the up or down movement for speed in auctions the way the old one does. Finally, I miss the scoreboard from the original! I loved seeing my character walk out with the others! And even if you are winning, you arent at the top! I was winning, but at the bottom of the list with only an arrow pointing to me.

Room for improvement

I would give itself M.U.L.E. five stars but the app as it is now about three. The main problem is that I dont find the single player mode challenging at all (In the two tournament games Ive played so far, I won easily by becoming the energy baron by about the halfway point of the game and making a killing from that). Has potential to be a great app, but its not quite there yet (really hoping that multiplayer gets added soon!).

Love it!!!!!

I LOVE M.U.L.E.!!! This is a great app and very very true to the original. The controls are not bad, they just take some getting used to. Most of the design changes are upgrades but some tweaks are necessary to make this a truly great game. 1) The most dire problem was the auction clock doesnt stop when buying/selling items. One character never sold his goods because the other players took up all the time selling their own Smithore. 2) It is difficult to know if I am at the trading price. Many times I bought/sold things accidentally also many times I intended to buy/sell things and it just didnt happen because I had a difficult time determining where I was in regard to the trading point. 3) Goes with number 2, I often sold/bought too many units. It is obvious great time and care went into this reproduction. BRAVO! Job well done!! I look forward to the multiplayer option. I really hope it turns out well. Updated review The new update is fantastic! It makes auctions easier, I quit losing MULEs, which was fine in the original, but very difficult on the phone, sped up auctions, skips auctions entirely, and seemed to fix the value of crystite. My only issue now is the computer sells off ALL its energy when it has an excess so it cant produce anything the next month. I look forward to the next patch.

Good but can improve

First, I played mule on a c64 a lot. Huge fan. I have played 5 times with this version - overall, it is fun and I like it. I will be playing this often. Items Id like to see: Auctions are hard to see the buy/sell price. Ive also sold more units a few times. I dont like the simultaneous turns. It speeds things up but distracts me. The random events are hard to read. An alert view might be better? I miss the characters walking up the screen like the original. You knew who was leading.

Buggy auctions

Key area, and game will either freeze or your goods could get sold off before you can respond. Needs to be fixed before this one is a buy.

Game has potential.

Mule Returns was rushed and underdeveloped. This game lacks mechanics found in the original version. Despite the edgy gameplay, Mule Returns has stunning visuals and graphics. It defiantly has potential, as it sits I would rate 3/5.

Excellent iOS take on a classic.

Its the full MULE gameplay experience you remember from your Atari 800, brought to your iPad. Its very impressive that the developers have managed to remain true to the original while updating all controls for the touch environment. Well with the cost of admission.

Like the classic but better

MULE was one of my favorite games in the 80s for my C64. This app is very close to the original and the recent updates are a great improvement.

Brilliant Fun - true to the original 80s game

I loved this game on my C-64 and am delighted to be able to play it again. The original game and original AI had some issues and I wanted some of that repeated here to recreate the old experience. I havent seen the incredibly stupid AI that some have reported. I play this game all the time. LOVE IT. That said, there are small details that could improve, but theyre small. Visually, the auction screens drive me mad because things arent aligned within their areas. Adding the ability to end auctions early instead of having to wait through pointless ones is also a welcome change. It could be tweaked a bit more as there are still some auctions that should be ended early (when some players run out of money but still need energy or food; when AI players decide not to sell their smithore). Id also love to see an option to turn on 8-bit style graphics. Thank you so much for bringing this game back to life!! (Wanna bring back Project: Space Station as well? Please?) questions? contact @enderFP

Love it!

I used to play this on my Atari 800, maybe the best game of that decade. To be honest, the music was a big draw for me, love the theme song. Kudos to Rob Adlers redux! Masterful! Game play is a little different, but still has all the elements. Buy, enjoy and be sure to play the theme through a large Bluetooth speaker cranked up. Sweet! :)

Style over Substance

Great graphics and artwork. The game itself is full of bugs that didnt exist in the original. Once the store ran out Smithore and mules, but the price of Smithore never went up, which meant the NPCs never sold theirs. So there were no Mules for the rest of the game. Once I restored a saved game and none of the goods my plots were producing populated my inventory, the NPCs and I produced no goods every round. These are show stopping bugs that could have been resolved with simple playtesting. This is the year 2014, and youd have a better experience with the Commodore 64 game.

Almost there

First off, kudos to the team for reinventing a beloved classic. Its got a new energy with the gameplay weve loved for decades. I just have some constructive criticisms: The noise when you tap the up and down buttons is irritating as hell. The bar that represents your price in auctions should be at the exact line of the characters feet. Not because thats how it was in the original, but because it would make it easier to understand where you are in the auction. Ive often sold at the wrong amount because I misunderstood where I was. The drop downs during the production phase are totally unnecessary and are time wasters. I know that adjacent plots give more produce, etc... When in the store, tapping a room should make the character walk there instead of walking into walls because theyre making a beeline. If I tap the mule pen, my character should know to walk straight and then turn right. When sales are made, the cash amounts add up with slow animated numbers. I like to see what my opponents have before I buy or sell, so I can jockey for position. The way it adds up now, I have to wait and wait for the numbers to climb while time ticks away. The transactions should be immediately represented in hygiene score, not flipping over time. It just confuses what is accurate. When no plots are for sale, I should have to tap to continue. I currently have no time to examine the colony before I make my mule purchases. These are criticisms, yes, but they dont in any way indicate a negative opinion of the game. I just think these changes would make it perfect.

Great refresh on a classic

Wow! Thats all I have to say! Excellent job bringing this classic into to present! I hope Telengard is next!

Awesome Game

With the latest update the AI seems to be MUCH BETTER. The AI could be a little tougher on standard. The AI is awesomely ruthless on tournament, which is great! Keep up the good work. Looking forward to multiplayer.

Needs work

Great to see MULE! However this app needs some work. Being a huge fan of MULE on C64 and SPACEHORSE on PC , I was super eager to buy this app. With some tweaking and development this app could be the next Plants V Zombies. Hopefully the developers will listen. 12 rounds instead of 6 would be nice

Save your money

Loved the original game and graphically this game is a huge improvement. Unfortunately thats the only positive its got going for it. They removed the strategy of turn order. The controls could not be worse if they tried. You move by clicking where you want to go. How can you screw that up? By not using pathing - you literally run into walls non stop if you click where you want to outfit your mule. So what you end up having to do is back up 4 pixels, move down 6 pixels and then reclick your destination hoping your now clear of the wall. Seriously, did anyone play test this abomination before release? Not worth the money even with the nostalgia factor.

Good Stuff

Great remake on one of the all time Atari classics. Putting in multiplayer would make the game sell like crystalite after a pirate raid.
